Visit or request current information about enclosure size, bedding, ventilation, cleaning, exercise and how dogs and cats are separated. Ask how often each animal is physically checked, how appetite, drinking, urine, stool and behaviour are recorded, what owners must provide, and how infectious-disease risks and vaccine requirements are managed.

Pets on medication need a written plan

For diabetes, post-operative recovery, senior pets or daily tablets, confirm who administers each dose, how it is documented, how food and medicine timing are coordinated and what happens after vomiting or a missed dose. Ask whether the staff have relevant training and whether the setting can truly provide the level of observation the pet needs.

Emergency access must be verified

“Veterinary supervised” can mean different things. Ask whether a veterinarian is actually on site, on call or reached through an outside clinic; what happens overnight; who may authorise transport or treatment; and how quickly you will be contacted. Record your regular veterinarian, emergency preference, spending authority and backup contact in writing before the stay.

Can every boarding provider manage daily medication?

No. Confirm staff training, written dose records, storage, timing and escalation for the specific medicine and condition.

What should I provide before boarding?

Provide diet and medicine instructions, health and vaccine records, behaviour or handling needs, regular-vet details, emergency consent, contacts and labelled belongings.

Does a hospital setting guarantee overnight care?

No. Verify current staffing, check frequency and emergency arrangements directly for the dates of the stay.
